Why metal makes sense here

Texas sun is hard on asphalt. Heat cycling dries the mat, granules shed, and the clock starts. Metal does not care about that in the same way, and a properly installed standing seam roof will still be doing its job long after two shingle roofs would have come and gone.

It also reflects heat rather than absorbing it, which shows up on a summer power bill. That is not a reason on its own to spend the money, but it is a real part of the math over twenty years.

The part people get wrong

Metal is unforgiving of a bad install. Fastener pattern, panel expansion, and the detailing at ridges, valleys and penetrations all have to be right, because metal moves with temperature and a roof that cannot move will find somewhere else to give.

Exposed fastener panels are the cheaper route and they have their place on a barn or a shop. On a house we generally steer you to concealed fastener standing seam, because every exposed screw is a gasket that will eventually need attention.
